Pub Visit - Europe (except Germany)

Krcma 1 Beer matThursday 10th May 2012

Bob Thompson

As we alighted from the bus in the village of Chýně to visit the Pivovarský Dvůr brewpub, I noticed this small pub located in an adjoining building. It had to be investigated.

I and faithful drinking comrade Russell walked in and took a seat. We were served immediately and, thanks to the beer menu posted outside the door, we knew exactly what we wanted.

Krcma 2 BuildingWe had a look at our surroundings. Well, there was no doubt about it, this was a very comfortable pub decorated in a rustic style with freshly baked pretzels on each table.

It was a bit like walking into a farm house and was reminiscent of the log cabin-type pubs that are found in the mountainous areas of Poland.

Krcma 4 fresh pretzelsThe name translates as "Brewery Tavern" and that is exactly what it is. The brewery is in the main restaurant next door, please see a separate report, and I guess that Pivovarská Krčma is where the locals go for drink. It was founded in 2004 but feels as if it has been there forever.

There is a very limited menu but the food looked good. It is also cheaper than that in the brewery alongside. Another good aspect is that the beer range is not the same as the "Head Office" next door. When we visited it was 10% Světlá (light lager), 12% Polotmava (Amber or half-brown) and 13% Ale. Of course, it was essential that I tried the Ale.

Krcma 3 Rustic styleIt is fairly obvious that it wasn't made with top fermenting yeast but I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised how close to the IPA taste it was, so it was clear that the correct ingredients were used. The other beers were equally good for their styles.

The pub advertises a large range of spirits, fourteen different spirits and ten brandies, nearly all of them derived from fruit and I suspect that they are distilled on the premises. Outside there is a very large drinking area, some of which is partially shaded.

I'd like to return here on a dark winter day a sit near the log fire. It is a very atmospheric pub.
