Pub Visit - Germany

Landbierparadies 1 Beer matMonday 13th August 2012

Bob Thompson

This pub is part of a small chain in the Nürnberg area. After the first pub was established they quickly extended to six pubs, four in Nürnberg and two in the neighbouring city of Fürth. Sadly some have closed and now there are just two in Nürnberg and one in Fürth, which was visited for this article.

Landbierparadies 4 Wooden caskIncidentally it was between these two places that Germany's first railway opened in 1835 with the first train hauled by locomotive Der Adler (The Eagle) which was built by George Stephenson in Newcastle and was based on his designs for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. His chief engineer William Wilson even drove the first trains.

Landbierparadies 3 Drinking roomBack to Landbierparadies (Country Beer Paradise), the concept is very straight forward. Each pub is supplied with a beer from a small brewery in Franconia (Frankenland), the area around Nürnburg.

Landbierparadies 2 Beer gardenIt is always served direct from a wooden cask and the pubs are decorated in a simple rustic style. The beer provided is changed continuously. A few other drinks are served and this particular pub offered solid Bavarian food.

On this warm evening all the clientele were in the biergarten which is shaded by twelve enormous trees planted in a symmetric arrangement, which I think were Plane. It seats six hundred drinkers and the service was quick.

The beer on this visit was Wiethaler Dunkel (dark) (4.9%) from the small village of Neuhof near Lauf to the north of the city. It was a well-balanced beer with a medium-bitter finish and I enjoyed it a lot.

Although I suspect Fürth is not a place most readers are likely to visit, should you be in the area this pub is commended to you.
