Preparations were well under way for the upcoming Munich Oktoberfest as I walked from the U-Bahn station to this pub. It is amazing to think that the massive buildings that house thousands of revellers are constructed from scratch every year.

My destination was a pub that, although part of the Hacker-Pschorr empire, brews its own beer.

It opened on 16th September 2005, the day before that year’s Oktoberfest began. As I approached I thought that the architecture of it looked rather like the modern brew pubs you find in Russia. It was built on the site of the old Hacker-Pschorr Biergarten, which in the 2000s appeared to lose its popularity outside of the Festival period. The new pub was original named Hacker-Pschorr Bavaria-Bräu, now just known as Bräuhaus. I got to the building but what was this; it looked closed yet there were some people inside.

They were workmen building a stage inside the pub and a notice on the door revealed that it was closed for an event on that day only!

The notice also told me that I could get a beer in the garden of the adjacent Italian Trattoria Bella Birreria (a beautiful beer place!). It is all part of the same complex with a sports bar, Sportbar B7, shoved in between the two.

All three premises share the same toilet facilities and all serve the beer from the Brew House, so all was not lost.

The two normal beers are Pschorr Zwickl (5.4%) served in ceramic krugs and Weissbier (5.5%). I had the former but it was presented in a glass as it originated from the Italian restaurant. They also do a seasonal beer but that was not available from Bella Birreria.

However I didn’t get to see or photograph the brewery which has a capacity of 3,000hl. I hope to go back one day so when I do I’ll write a longer, more comprehensive article and replace this one. It was a really nice day so it was no hardship to sit in the restaurant’s biergarten. I thought the beer was very good, being unfiltered and having a lot of taste compared with the rather bland offerings of Munich’s big four breweries.

So, I think the brew pub is worth going to and I’m sure you will have better luck than I.

The best way to get here is on the U-Bahn using lines U4 and U5. Theresienwiese is the station you require and it is just one stop from Hauptbahnhof (Main station).
This is also the station for the Oktoberfest should you be so inclined.
It is just under 10 minutes walk to the Bräuhaus.
