Corona, California:
Main Street Brewery at Lamppost Pizza
Thursday 24th May 2012
Bob Thompson
The second Pizza / Brewery combination on the same day!
The front of the building is taken up by Lamppost Pizza with the rear given over to a proper bar room. This is where the brewery is also located.
I saw that there were ten regular beers brewed in house and they were as follows:
Hefeweizen, in the American style; Honey Blonde; Rimpau Red Ale, American Red type using a lot of crystal malt; Maibock, using Perle hops and Bishops Tripple Trippel (9.0%) in the Belgian Abbey style. There were also Precision Pale Ale (4.6%), in the American style with lots of Cascade hops; Hop Daddy IPA, again in the US style; Coffee Pearl Stout (6.1%), a sweet stout; El Diablo Rojo (7.5%), an American Strong Ale and Mr Boneworthy's Barley Wine (12.0%).
Honey Blonde was not available on that day so I selected five from the range that was available and this is what I thought.
Rimpau Red Ale was quite mild and soft. Precision Pale Ale I liked a lot, being bitter and very refreshing. Hop Daddy IPA was just right, being well balanced and not too assertive. Coffee Pearl Stout had no coffee flavours and was a bit too sweet for my palate but that was what it is supposed to be. El Diablo Rojo has been described as an American Strong Ale. Maybe I was influenced by the Spanish name but I thought I could detect Chilli in what was otherwise a Red Ale.
In addition to the house-brewed beers there were a few other interesting offerings. These were Stone (Escondido, CA) IPA (6.9%), and Hanger 24 (North Redlands, CA) Columbus IPA (7.0%). There was also Wyder's Dry Cider all the way from Middlebury, VT.
As the pub is very close to the Metrolink station it is convenient and comes highly recommended.
