Ramsgate, Kent: Conqueror Ale House,
Eleven months on and update 2013

Friday 14th October 2011

Linda Clarke

On my way to the Thanet Cider Festival I decided to call in at the Conqueror Alehouse as it is almost on the way. It is located at 4c Grange Road, on the corner of St Mildred's Road and is one of the new wave of micropubs. This movement was first started at the Butchers Arms, Herne.

conqueror 2011 1 pubThe Conqueror is run by Colin Aris, (pictured in the doorway) who used to be the festival organiser of the Cider Festival before he started running his own pub.

It usually sells ales from three Kent Microbreweries plus Broomfield Cider, a Kentish favourite of mine. I chose Wagglers Bitter, currently brewed at Welton's Horsham brewery, as I like a bitter beer, they also had Canterbury Ales Miller's Ale and Gadds Doppel Hop.

The Conqueror is great little pub and where you can be sure of a friendly welcome and good conversation. Like most of these micropubs it has limited opening hours so please see below. Further details on www.conqueror-alehouse.co.uk

In 2013 the Conqueror became one of the top 4 pubs in the UK, as judged by CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale. This is a real accolade and our sincerest congratulations go to Colin Aris, landlord, licensee and owner. The other three finalists were: the Tom Cobley Tavern, Spreyton, Devon, a former winner in 2006; the Bridge End Inn, Ruabon, Wales, the winner in 2012; and the Baum, Rochdale, Greater Manchester, this years winner so CAMRA's National Pub of the Year 2013.
