Beer Cellar 1The Beer Cellar has an enviable location right in the centre of the city of Exeter. It is an interesting little place that despite its appearance is more “micropub” than “bar”.

Situated in South Street, it has large picture windows on either side. Entering the L-shaped bar counter on the left side is apparent. There is a shelf underneath the window to South Street along with three stools and a fridge full of bottled beers.

The wall facing the counter is tiled and in front of it are a number of high tables and stools. The bar counter is made of wood with a varnished top. Beyond the counter is a separate counter which accommodated a coffee grinder and espresso machine. There are two steps up at the end of the room leading to glass doors which give access to a patio area with more tables and chairs. One end of the cathedral can be seen from here.

Beer Cellar 2The pub opened at the beginning of 2014 in what was previously a Chinese noodle take-away. Right from the beginning it was intended to offer an off-license in addition to the bar. There are usually over eighty bottled beers, mostly foreign, but also including some from home.

The owners also operate the Penpont and Firebrand breweries of Launceston, Cornwall. They also have off-licenses in Truro and Launceston.

The pub can offer up to six cask beers but there were only three available when I called in. They were: Bath Ales (Warmley, Gloucestershire) Prophecy Pale Ale (3.8%); Stroud Brewery (Brinscombe, Gloucestershire) Tom Long (3.8%) and Salcombe Brewing (Kingsbridge, Devon) Shingle Bay (4.2%). The pub does carry-outs - Wine, Cider, Spirits and is wheelchair accessible. They take Mastercard and Visa and offer free Wi-Fi.

This is the ideal place to re-charge your batteries if you are in central Exeter, highly recommended.
