Melton Mowbray is famous for Pork Pies and Stilton cheese, but if you also wish to indulge in some history and good beer, then a call into the Anne of Cleves is well worth it.
The building originates from 1384 and has its origins as a Parsons dwelling and a church is still to be found adjacent. In 1539 the building, became Crown property before being gifted to Thomas Cromwell.
Then as part of the divorce settlement between Henry VIII and Anne of Cleves after Cromwell had been dispensed with it was gifted to her.
Moving on to the current day the building still exists as a family run pub, with connections to Everards Brewery, although at the time of visit there was a mini beer festival.
On entering you find a timber and stone floor with a single bar with a central pillar which suggests it may one have been divided into two bars.
To the rear is a large garden area which has won awards.
Real ale options at the time of visit were Pheasantry Brewing Golden Ale 5%, Vocation Brewery Heart & Soul Session IPS 4.4%, Redwillow Brewery Feckless Best Bitter 4.1%, Titanics Plum Porter 4.9% plus Everards Tiger 4.2%.
On Keg Wye Valley Sin City 5% was also on. Outside of the Beer festival you can normally expect to find two other Everards ales on plus one guest.
Plenty of other keg options are available, some from Everards plus the usual mainstream offerings such as Guinness, Bierra Moretti, Cruzcampo, Carling and Camden Stout.
CAMRA member discounts are normally available.
