Bob Thompson
This was the first-established of Stuttgart's brew-pubs, as it was founded in 1987. The "Calwer Corner Brewery" is to be found on the first floor of a building located at the junction of Lange Strasse and the pedestrian Calwer Strasse. The entrance is from Calwer Strasse up some rather notable marble steps with the brewery's name emblazoned on the risers.
Inside the pub is equally impressive. As I entered I noticed the food service area and kitchen on the right. Then the brewery in a glass fronted room to the left and the bar further left to that.
The pub exudes a comfortable feeling accentuated by the extensive use of dark wood panelling and stained glass, both on internal divisions and in the windows. All this provides the impression that it has been there forever.
The food is very much in the local Swabian style which is reckoned by some as the finest in the country. There are often themed food / drink events throughout the year.
In addition to the normal range of beers there was a seasonal special, Weihnachtsbier (Christmas beer) (5.8%) and I had this first. It looked and tasted a bit like a Red Ale, yet was smooth and dry with just a hint of bitterness. It had a flavour that I thought was appropriate to the season; very likable.
I then started on the regular beers. I began with Schwarzbier (Black beer) (5.0%) which had a nice balance of darker malts with a good bitter finish. This was followed by Braumeisterbier (Helles, light) (5.5%) which was cloudy with a smooth medium bitter taste.
My last beer was Pils (5.0%) which I thought was very strange. It was not salty and dry, the typical German interpretation of the style. On the contrary it was very fruity and not at all dry or bitter. The other beers were great but this one was not appreciated as much. They also had Hefeweizen (4.9%) which I didn't sample.
Beer is served in 0.3 litre glasses, which are rather small for this area. In addition, the Pils is offered in 0.2 litre stem glasses. You can however, order a pitcher which gives a good saving over the normal-sized glasses.
This is a very nice pub that offers a welcome refuge to bustling shopping streets in the surrounding area.
