Nürnberg, Bayern (Bavaria):
Schanzenbräu Schankwirtschaft
Sunday 23rd May 2010
Bob Thompson
This visit is to the brewery tap (Schankwirtschaft) of the small Schanzenbräu brewery.
The brewery opened in 2004 in the Gostenhof district of Nürnberg.
In January 2007 they leased these premises a little further down the same street.
This bar has a good atmosphere and surely must have been a pub before the brewery took it on.
It's basically a small room with a tiny bar at one end.
The tables are traditional scrubbed wood and wooden bench seating is found around three of the walls, although there are cushions for sensitive bottoms.
There is a traditional food menu that changes daily with Bavarian classics, sausages, and a vegetarian choice, amongst others.
There are two beers brewed: Rot (red, 4.9%) and Hell (light, 4.8%).
Both are unfiltered and I must say that both are very good.
A new development is that they are now produced for other customers and can be found in some other bars in the city.
There is a biergarten with waiter / waitress service which is quite large considering the size of the pub itself.
The pub used to open at 17.00 in the afternoon but this has now changed and the hours are now as shown below.
