Pub Visit - Germany

Bruderherz1Friday 27th April 2019

Bob Thompson

Here at Bruderherz you will find everything for a successful visit to Nürnberg. Although that sounds like an advertisement it is the truth.

Bruderherz has a restaurant with a brewery and a bar. There is a hotel and also hostel accommodation in dormitories, all under one roof. It opened in September 2018 and was established by the Braveries Gutmann from Titting which is a town south of Nürnberg.

Bruderherz2The small brewery which is to be found in the basement brews just one beer, Mia Lager whose strength is unknown. It is an unpasteurised and unfiltered helles beer which was found to be very pleasant. Gutmann only brews wheat beers so naturally this is the source of that style of beer. However there are offerings from other local breweries on draught and a large selection in bottles.

Wife Linda and I had arrived in the city that morning at the end of a delightful river cruise that began in Düsseldorf. Unfortunately we had to disembark by 09.00. So, after storing our luggage at our hotel around the corner, we were able to take advantage of the early opening hours of the pub, see below for details. We started with a coffee to begin with as we weren’t sure whether they would serve alcohol before 10.00. There was no fear of that though as a customer came in shortly after and ordered a beer.

The bar / restaurant is decorated in a modern yet comfortable style. The tables and chairs are light varnished pine and the fitted furniture is dark oak which looks very classy.

Bruderherz3You can tell that the interior has been designed by a prestigious architects practice. There are large windows at the front of the property that let in a lot of natural light.

From the entrance door which is at the side of the main room, you can find a number of tables by the windows, this is where we sat. Passing the “meeter and greeter’s” desk a right turn brings you to the long bar counter with stools in front. On the left there are more tables before the staircase that goes down to the toilet facilities and the brewery.

Beyond the staircase is an old piano, I wonder if it is ever used? Then on the left is another staircase, this one leading up to another floor. Beyond the room opens out with lots of tables and chairs. This area is used mostly for dining. The walls are bare brick and at that time of day provided a rather cool atmosphere. However, I bet that changes in the evening.

Bruderherz4The two people responsible for the décor are Luis Schlor and Raphael Gutmann who manage the pub, hotel and restaurant. “Bruderherz” actually translates as brother heart, but probably more accurately “brotherly love”. According to the owners the name should imply “honesty and cordiality, friendliness and authenticity”. Despite the pub’s modernity, the menu is mostly traditional Franconian fare.

The pub is a fine addition to the Nürnberg beer scene and should be visited for its single home brewed beer.
